Analysis of questinaire

Question 1
Which age group do you fit into?
10 - 15: 3
16 - 21: 5
22 - 27: 1
28+: 3
This shows our audience will mostly fit into the 16-21 age range. This is because within that age group people are a lot more interested in music and most spend a lot of time online meaning they would spend more time on YouTube watching videos.

Question 2
Which genre of music video interests you most?
Pop: 5
Rap: 1
Rock: 3
Indie: 1
Alternative: 0
Other: 2 - (Country+Garage)
The highest is Pop, this is because this is the type of music which more easily accessible due to radio and TV. Our chosen genre will be in the rock/ metal genre, this shows we still have an audience even if it is small.

Question 3
Do you watch music video’s on a weekly basis?
Yes:
No: 4
More people said yes, this means that we will have a broad range of people who pay attention to music videos.

Question 4
Is your favourite singer/band mainstream or independent/not that well known?
Mainstream: 8
Independent: 4

Question 5
Do you purchase an artist’s track mainly based on how interesting you find the accompanying music video?
Yes: 5
No: 7
This shows that even if we make an amazing video it wont make people like the band/music. So we have to be willing to accept not everyone will like it.

Question 6
Do you believe scantily clad/barley dressed women in music video’s affect the sales of the music?
Yes: 9
No: 3
Most said yes, this is because a lot of mainstream music videos have male gaze to draw in a wider audience. It helps with the sales because men are more likely to watch the video therefore introduced to the song and they might buy it.

Question 7
Do you prefer music performance video’s or video’s with a strong storyline/narrative?
Performance: 4
Narrative: 5
Both: 3
This is good because due to our genre we will include both narrative and performance. Even though this had the lowest result the other two show that people are still interested in both.

Question 8
Do you think Youtube is the main site where music videos are viewed, compared to on the TV?
Yes: 9
No: 3
This is because more people sit at home on a laptop/computer then watch TV so they are more likely to watch videos on YouTube. Also YouTube means that you can watch any video any time whereas on TV you have no choice.

Question 9
Do you think music video’s are a good way to promote an artist?
Yes: 8
No: 4
This will help us because be are using a unsigned band so they are very unknown so this would help promote them. But this is due to the fact a music video is the time for the artist to sell themselves and show their image. The downfall is that if they promote the wrong image they can set themselves in a bad light.

Question 10
Do you think you would buy a song without seeing the music video to accompany it?
Yes: 4
No: 5
Maybe: 3
This is because music videos play a big part in the popularity in a song.

Initial Ideas: Costumes

These are the costumes we are considering to put our band in for the video shoot. we are using the bloody hospital gowns and scrubs for performance shots, this is because the band wear these on stage as a costume, therefore we are using these items of clothing to fit in with the motif of the band. We have also decided to put our lead singer who is also our actor in a straight jacket. This is because our music video is based in an asylum.

Kate's Magazine Advertisment

My Magazine Advertisment

This is the magazine advertisemnt I created for our band - Kill The Freak. The background will be black and the text will all be in red to make it stand out and catch the audience's attention. The name of the band will be in large, bold text at the very top of the page. I have also put the band's songs on the inside of hand in the centre of the page so that it advertises their new EP, as well as their new single at the top of the page.

I created this advertisement to promote the band and their new EP, as well as thier Facebook and Twitter pages so that thier fans can access their social media sites and purchase and listen to their songs easily.

Lighting Notes

The YMCA (Youth Club) - Band Practice Room

For our chosen location, we have decided upon The YMCA (Youth Club) Band Practice Room. The main room we will be filming in is the practice room where the band will be performing with their instruments. We will have the main lights in the room all switched off, and have smaller lamps light up the instruments to give the room a more un-natural, artificial more sinister feel. We will be supplying the lamps ourselves and we will bring about 3 - 4 with us.

When filming our actor (Connar), we will film him sitting down in a cupboard, confined in a small space. Since the cupboard is dark and has no natural lighting, we will again need to use small lamps to light him, again giving a  un-natural, artificial more sinister feel to the shots.

Jennys Digipak ideas

I designed the first digipak in this way as the images link to the plot and theme of the music video and also fits with the image of the band. The dark colours used are often seen in other album covers and digipack created for other bands in this genre. The front cover is an image that is very similar to one from the music video. There is again a picture of the band so the people buying the digipack will know what the band look like.
I designed the second digipak in this way as the images link to the narrative of the music video and also fits with the image of the band. The dark colours used are often seen in other digipak form bands in this genre. The picture on the middle of the inside panel is of a corridor in an asylum which links to the theme of the music video. The image of the band is also there so the people buying the CD will know what the band look like.

Kate's Idea for Digipak

Kill The Freak - Idea 1

This is my first idea for the Digipak design. I have included a photo of the band to show the target audience who is in it, I have also included a tracklist on the back, as well as a flap on the inside of the Digipak to hold a booklet with song information in.

I created a Digipak so that, as a group, we will have a rough idea of how we want the theme of the song/ advertisements to look so that it can be consistent throughout both the video and advertisement products e.g the magazine ad and the digipak.

Abbey's Location Scouting

When considering location for filming our music video, I thought about the abandoned building that I walk past on my route to school. I feel that this location would give a good feel to the video and goes well with the generic conventions of the bands genre.

The downsides to using this location would be that we would have to film in the day time as we wouldn't be able to get any lighting to the location and getting drums there would also be an issue.

Another issue with using this location is that it is outside and therefore we would have to be very aware of noise pollution being that there is a church nearby.

Kate's Location Scouting

Drum/Band Room

When choosing a location to shot our music video in, I thought about my friend George's drum room. I believe this is a good shooting location for our music video as the room is long, like a corridor and smaller items and the drum kit could easily be removed in preparation for filming. It also has a range of lighting/ plug sockets so we could alter how dim/bright we wanted the lights with ease.

The room would also be good as it's insulated and soundproof meaning when using instruments and voice, we would get a much nicer sound on camera.

One issue we would have with this room though is that the carpet and walls are slightly too dark as we originally wanted a plain white room to film in.
