Torture the Vile Lyric Analysis

I have analysed the lyrics to Kill the Freak's song 'Torture the Vile'. I have done this to look deeper into the meaning of the lyrics and consider the conventions the genre of music includes, as well as the type of language the band tends to use.

I think the narrative for a music video to this song would be set in a school where the main character would be bullied and throughout the video he would plot his revenge.

There would be lots of fast paced cuts and most of the shots would be handheld to add to the atmosphere of the song. The lighting would be dim in most shots as the storyline of the video would reflect this.

I Hate This Drug - Kill The Freak Lyrics Analysis

I Hate This Drug
Depression
Self harm
Suicide
Drugs/over dose
Mental illness

Everything is just so violent
Will my wounds ever scab?
No drug that I am taking
Could cause this pain that I am feeling
Go away
Stop feeding me these vicious lies
These thoughts have scarred my brain
I'm so close yet I feel so far away

Is everything just in my head?
I don't need any of these meds
you'll never understand my life
I always feel this pain

I hate this drug x4

Suck up air I'm breathing in
Tie the noose around my throat
Freedom,
To all the hate that I've locked up
there's no chance
the more I try the harder I fall
I know this life I've made
is all my fault

Is everything just in my head?
I don't need any of these meds
you'll never understand my life
I always feel this pain

I hate this drug x4

What happening to me?

I hate this drug x4

Narrative of the song
  • Maybe a suicide note
  • self harm and depression
  • drugs/overdose
  • internal struggle
Filming
  • Lots of high angles showing the character is small and weak
  • fast cuts making it seem disjointed and faced the way the character is feeling
  • Crossed prosed making everything look cold
I was told by the singer the song isn't actually about drugs, the word drug is in place of feelings. The character doesn't feel in control of his feelings and is addicted to how they feel.

Our location and how we overcame problems

At first we wanted our location to look as much like an asylum as possible by having a bright white room that is as clean as possible. We also wanted to do some shots in a hospital corridor.
We spoke to Abbey's mum who works in the hospital to see if we could use the corridor. She told us that we couldn't be allowed access to the corridor, so we had to try and think of a new effective opening shot. We then went searching for a white room, this was difficult because there aren't a lot of empty white rooms about. We have a few friends of ours which have drum rooms, these are sound proof empty rooms which only contain drums and amps. We first asked on of Kate's friends but he was getting his refurbished during the time we planned to film. So the we went to our back up which was our friend George's out house/drum room. After talking to him and trying to work out times he was free and our band was free we realised it wasn't practical.

We then found ourselves a bit stuck. We really struggled to find ourselves a room which would work so we thought about maybe making a set. This would have consisted of white painted wood nailed together and we was going to put it in my garden which has a large light so we could film at night as well or just as extra lighting. So we went on websites such as B&Q and found out this would cost up way more then we thought. We tried asking around to see if anyone had any spare wood we could buy off them cheaper but no one did. This meant we was stuck again.

After a long group discussion we decided that we just needed to fins a room and then make it work with white sheets and clever angling of the camera. So we started looking again and came up with using the YMCA because they let people use the rooms for band practice on a Thursday. This meant everyone had to pay £2 for using the room. The only issue with the YMCA is that we could only use the room for an hour and a half at a time so we needed another place to do the acting shots. So after talking to our teacher we decided to use the drama studio with our white sheets again. We could get away with this because our actor goes to our school so he is available during the day. Also we plan on using focus on the camera cleverly so that the background is blurred and the foreground is in focus, so that you can't tell that it was filmed in a drama studio.

Rough plan for music video (editing and shots)

The transitions between shots will be mostly cuts because the song is fast paced, so fades would be to slow. We plan on using some fade to whites towards the end of the song. This to add a more surreal element as Connar our main character goes more insane.

We want the shots to be fast paced to fit the tempo of the music.
We will be adding an effect called cross processed to all of the shots, this makes the shot darker and gives it a blue tint, making it look colder and less homely.

All of the close ups we will set the focus so that the background is out of focus but the foreground is. This will add a more surreal element to the shots because it changes the depth perception.
For all the instrument shots we plan on filming the whole song through. This is so that we have a lot of footage to work with and pick the part of the song which looks best with that shot.
For all the acting shots we will film at least 3 times to get the best out come.

We will also film the whole song for each lip sink shot because we want the best part of the song for each shot.

Casting Information

Connar Ridd - Guitarist, Singer and Actor
We chose to keep Connar as the guitarist and singer of the band because he knows all the songs and he is a reliable and confident performer. He studied Drama at GCSE so we knew had the talent and drive to be the main character in our video. Once in the band's stage attire, he fits the ideal image we are trying to portray.

Brandan Ridd - Drummer
We are keeping Brandan as our drummer because he is good at keeping in time with the song as he knows it well, this means filming his shots will go smoother. He is a dedicated member of the band and will be reliable. He is enthusiastic about music and regularly goes to see live bands for inspiration.

Robert Campion - Bassist
Rob is a talented bassist who is dedicated to his music. His look fits with the stereotypical metal fan, meaning he will fit with the look of our music video. He also studied Drama at a GCSE level so we can count on him to be confident and a well rounded performer.

Lyrics of the chosen song

Im A Freak
Verse 1:
It's these voices in my head
They tell me what to do
It's this other side of me
that I can't control
It's a place inside my mind
That i can't set free
It is undeniable
It's taking over my life
Chorus X2:
I'm disordered
I'm weak
I am ruined
And I'm a freak
Verse 2
It's my brain it doesn't work
I get confused
It's a dark type of me
That can't be killed
It stops me being alone
When things get wierd
Its unpredictable
It feels so alive
Chorus X2:
I'm Disordered
I'm weak
I am ruined
And I'm a freak
What am i?
I'm a..
What am I?
I'm a..
What am I?
I'm a..
What am i?
